Millennial Craftsmanship, Bone & Wood Bloom
National Intangible Cultural Heritage · Oriental Aesthetics of Bone-and-Wood Inlay.
Bone-and-Wood Inlay is a National Intangible Cultural Heritage of China, an ancient craft spanning over 4,000 years. It mainly involves carving ox bone, mother-of-pearl, and boxwood into patterns, embedding them into redwood or hardwood bases, and finishing with polishing and lacquering.
Neolithic Longshan Culture (c. 2500–2000 BCE)
The earliest inlay prototypes appeared. Coffins from the Yin Ruins in Anyang, Henan, show mixed inlays of animal bone and mother-of-pearl—the earliest physical evidence of the craft.
Sui & Tang Dynasties (581–907 CE)
The craft matured. Ningbo became the core production base, with its works as imperial tributes. Praised for "antique patterns resembling Han-dynasty paintings".
Ming & Qing Dynasties (1368–1840 CE)
Reached its peak during the Qianlong–Daoguang periods. Three core techniques emerged: flat inlay, raised inlay, and mixed inlay. Popular motifs included landscapes, flowers, birds, and opera figures. Widely used in furniture and architectural decorations, symbolizing status for wealthy Jiangnan families.
Modern & Contemporary Eras
In 2008, Ningbo Bone-and-Wood Inlay was inscribed on the Second Batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Together with Zhu gold woodcarving, gold-lacquered filigree, and gold-silver embroidery, it is known as one of Ningbo’s Four Great Treasures. Modern artisans innovate while preserving traditions, integrating the ancient craft into contemporary life.
